Dismantling of Montaña Mina windmills begins after years of disuse

On Thursday (26th December 2024), work started to dismantle the wind turbines at the Montaña Mina wind farm in Lanzarote, marking the end of a facility that has been inactive since 2017. Over the years, the site has fallen into severe disrepair, posing significant safety risks.

This included a hazardous fire and the subsequent collapse of one of the turbines, which highlighted the urgency of addressing the deteriorating infrastructure.

The total cost of dismantling the wind farm remains undisclosed. An earlier estimate placed the cost at just over one million euros, but experts believe this figure may have changed due to delays and increased complexity over the years.

David Rocío, spokesperson for the San Bartolomé City Council, has provided additional details about the dismantling process, which is expected to restore the area to a safer and more environmentally stable condition.

The move reflects a broader commitment to addressing ecological concerns and ensuring public safety in the region. Further updates on the progress of the project and its financial impact are anticipated in the coming weeks.

The Canary Islands Coalition in San Bartolomé has welcomed the news, viewing it as a positive step forward. Members of the opposition in the San Bartolomé Council praised the ecological transition department, led by Mariano Zapata, for its decisive action. They contrasted this with what they describe as the mismanagement of the previous administration under Ángel Víctor Torres.
