The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) have reported that the dead body of a person was spotted floating in the sea at 6.30pm yesterday afternoon (Wednesday), just a few metres from the shore of Media Luna beach in Telde in Gran Canaria.
Kitesurfers called 112 after spotting the corpse floating near the La Terrazas Shopping Centre, and CECOES dispatched emergency resources to the beach to recover the body from the water.
According to the first reports from CECOES, the body is of a male aged between 35-40 years old with the characteristics of a person from the Maghreb, who was semi-naked as he was wearing trousers but no top, and who could have been dead for several hours.
He has several bruises and open wounds on various parts of his body and has no documents or forms of identification about his person.
The National Police guarded the body until the arrival of the judicial authority who formally instructed the corresponding proceedings to remove the body for autopsy and identification.
The first indications are that he was on one of the shipwrecked boats crossing the Atlantic to the Canary Islands from West Africa.
