The emergency services responded swiftly on Friday morning to rescue a baby trapped inside a locked vehicle in Lanzarote. The incident occurred on Calle Irlanda in Puerto del Carmen at around 9:15am, when a concerned local resident noticed the situation and immediately raised the alarm.
According to the CECOES report, firefighters arrived quickly and used specialised tools to unlock the vehicle. The baby was safely removed and assessed at the scene, where it was confirmed to be in good health and the operation concluded without further incident.
Authorities have reiterated the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, even for a short period. Temperatures inside a parked car can rise rapidly, creating a potentially life-threatening environment for young children. This phenomenon, commonly referred to as vehicular heatstroke, can lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion, and in extreme cases, death.
With rising awareness of these dangers, many jurisdictions, including those in Spain, enforce strict laws against leaving minors alone in cars. Public safety campaigns continue to urge parents and guardians to always check the backseat before locking and leaving their vehicles, emphasising that even a momentary lapse in attention can have serious consequences.
The emergency services have commended the quick-thinking resident whose alertness likely prevented a much more serious outcome.
