Ashotel has condemned the state that the Callao Sport Hotel in Costa Adeje has been left in, after nearly ten months of illegal occupation, describing the building as being left “in a deplorable state”. The Tenerife hotel association says the long delay in removing occupants has resulted in extensive damage and significant costs for the owners, Domasa SA.
Speaking to Atlántico Hoy, Ashotel’s general manager, Juan Pablo González, welcomed Wednesday’s “complete eviction of the hotel”, but criticised public authorities for not acting sooner.
He noted that Ashotel had urged a swift and decisive intervention months ago to allow the owners to recover the building “in the best possible condition”, something that has clearly not happened.
González stressed that at least the company has now regained possession of the property, adding: “We hope they can find a quick solution to their situation.” According to Guardia Civil sources, when officers arrived on Wednesday morning, almost all of the 200 occupants had already left, with only six or seven remaining inside.
Up to 300 occupants since February
The hotel had been occupied by between 200 and 300 people since February. The Provincial Court of Tenerife ordered its eviction at the start of November after finding indications of criminal activity, including theft, drug trafficking, and significant material damage.
Over recent months, several people were caught removing furniture and attempting to sell it. The value of the stolen items alone is thought to run into tens of thousands of euros.
The owners have now been able to re-enter the premises, confirming fears about the extent of the damage. The building has also suffered two fires during the occupation. The first, in the summer, resulted in one person being charged. The second occurred just days ago, on 5th December.

The rise and fall of the Callao Sport Hotel
The Callao Sport opened in 2009, built by Construcciones Domasa on the site of former sports facilities. It was designed as a four-star hotel with 92 rooms aimed at French tourists, combining luxury accommodation with sports and wellness activities.
The hotel closed in 2020 following the COVID-19 lockdown and remained shut until February this year, when an attempted break-in escalated rapidly into a full-scale occupation, with hundreds taking over the rooms.
Eviction ordered after months of delays
Domasa SA reported the occupation immediately and requested a preventive eviction, but the courts initially refused, arguing that the measure was disproportionate. It was not until last month that the Provincial Court overturned the earlier ruling from the Arona courts and ordered the hotel to be cleared after confirming evidence of criminal activity.
The hotel’s owner, Margarita Domínguez, said the property was in a terrible condition and revealed that she had been forced to pay €30,000 in electricity bills during the time the building was illegally occupied.
The full extent of the damage is still being assessed as the company decides on the next steps for the future of the hotel.
