After more than 30 years on hold, Arona has finally unlocked the future of El Mojón, the largest urban development plan in the Canary Islands, and one of the most ambitious in Spain. This landmark project will transform Los Cristianos and its surroundings, creating new spaces, facilities, and opportunities for both residents and visitors.

The agreement, signed between Arona Council and the Compensation Board of landowners, marks the beginning of a new phase for both the municipality and the south of Tenerife.

The El Mojón plan is expected to attract €2 billion in direct investment and up to €8 billion indirectly, while generating thousands of jobs during its construction and future operation. Local businesses, hospitality, and services are set to benefit from the economic boost, reinforcing Arona’s position as a leading destination in Tenerife South.

A once-in-a-generation transformation

Covering almost one million square metres, the development promises a complete upgrade of the area with:

  • Vast green spaces for leisure, relaxation, and family activities.
  • Modern sports and cultural facilities open to the community.
  • Improved roads, parking, and pedestrian zones for easier access around Los Cristianos.
  • Land dedicated to schools and educational centres, strengthening local services.

For tourists, this means a more attractive, accessible, and vibrant destination. For residents, it marks the arrival of long-awaited public infrastructure that will improve quality of life across the municipality.

From stalled project to sustainable growth

Originally approved in the 1990s, the plan was paralysed for decades by technical and legal challenges. Thanks to a 2024 urban agreement and final approval this year, El Mojón is now moving forward. Crucially, the project is being developed with sustainability at its core, balancing growth with environmental care to ensure the area remains attractive for generations to come.

The event, held today at Arona Town Hall, was attended by the President of the El Mojón Compensation Board, Miguel Villarroya (CEO of Spring Hotels Group), the Mayor of Arona, Fátima Lemes, and the Councillor for Urban Planning, Javier Baute.

What it means for visitors and locals

The transformation of El Mojón will:

  • Re-shape Los Cristianos with new green areas and cultural attractions.
  • Enhance mobility and connectivity, making it easier to move between resorts and residential zones.
  • Create a modern, welcoming urban space that blends tourism with community life.

For anyone living in or visiting the south of Tenerife, this is the beginning of a new chapter, a project that not only opens doors for investment but also delivers better services, improved infrastructure, and more enjoyable spaces to explore and experience.

Arona is setting the stage to become a model of sustainable urban planning in the Canary Islands, making life better for residents while offering visitors an even richer holiday experience.
