The Canary Islands are experiencing relatively calm weather this week, with clear skies and mild conditions dominating the forecast. However, the tranquillity may soon be disrupted, as the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) warns of an unusual meteorological development starting tomorrow, Thursday.
The arrival of calima, a dust-laden wind from the Sahara Desert, is expected to impact the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, creating an “explosive mix” of weather conditions.
Current Conditions Across the Archipelago
For now, the skies over the Canary Islands remain mostly clear, with high clouds prevailing in the eastern islands. Some low morning clouds are expected in the eastern parts of the archipelago, while low clouds are also set to dominate in Tenerife and the western islands.
Temperatures are stable across the region, with a slight increase in maximum temperatures anticipated in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Winds will be light, predominantly from the east.
Maritime conditions are generally calm, with variable winds of Force 1 to 3, occasionally reaching Force 3 or 4 in northern and southern areas. A north or northwest swell is forecast, producing waves between one and two metres high.
The Threat of Calima
The key weather shift is expected to begin Thursday, as calima approaches the Islands. This phenomenon, which involves strong winds carrying Saharan dust, could reduce visibility and alter the stable winter weather typically associated with this time of year.
While calima is a common occurrence in the region, its arrival during the winter season is unusual and may bring further atmospheric instability.
Island-Specific Forecasts
LANZAROTE:
Clear skies with high clouds and some low morning clouds in the east. Temperatures will range between 17°C and 22°C, with light easterly winds.
FUERTEVENTURA:
Similar to Lanzarote, clear skies with high clouds and morning low clouds in the east. Temperatures will range between 17°C and 22°C, with light easterly winds.
GRAN CANARIA:
Mostly clear skies with high clouds and low morning clouds in the east. Winds will remain light from the east, intensifying slightly along southern coasts. Temperatures are forecasted to stay between 17°C and 22°C.
TENERIFE:
Low clouds will dominate, particularly in the morning. Temperatures will hold steady, ranging from 17°C to 23°C. Easterly winds will pick up later in the day, especially along southeastern coasts.
AEMET’s Advisory
The potential impact of calima has prompted AEMET to advise residents and visitors to remain vigilant. Those in the eastern islands may experience reduced air quality and visibility, with dust potentially affecting daily activities. Authorities recommend monitoring updates and taking precautions, particularly for individuals sensitive to air pollutants.
As the Canary Islands transition from tranquil weather to the arrival of this dust-laden phenomenon, the situation underscores the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of the archipelago’s climate.
