7-year-old girl hospitalised after being hit by car on pedestrian crossing in Los Cristianos

A seven-year-old girl was injured after being hit by a Smart car while crossing at a pedestrian crossing near Avenida Chayofita in Los Cristianos on Friday (7th February), as reported by the

The incident took place just after 7:00pm, which is when the 112 call centre received several calls informing them of the incident and requesting urgent medical assistance for the child, so CECOES sent the necessary emergency resources.

Two patrols from the Arona Local Police arrived at the scene within minutes, where officers found a blue Smart car facing the wrong way on the opposite lane of traffic.

According to information gathered by the Canary Islands Local Police blog, the driver of the Smart car, a 34-year-old Russian woman who lives in Tenerife, had exited a parking area in the wrong direction. Instead of correcting her course and adhering to road markings, she continued driving against the flow of traffic at high speed.

The young girl was riding her toy scooter when she was hit by the Smart Car whilst on the pedestrian crossing. Following the impact, the car continued to move several metres before coming to a stop. Emergency personnel took the child to Hospiten Sur by ambulance, where she received treatment for her injuries.

The authorities are closely monitoring the girl’s condition, and depending on the severity of her injuries, the driver, who tested negative for alcohol, may be charged with reckless driving and causing injury through negligence.
