The Canary Islands Volcanological Institute (Involcan) have reported that a new lava flow from the La Palma volcano is descending the slopes of the island at an approximate speed of 70 metres per hour, passing between the mountains of Todoque and La Laguna.

In the last few hours, the advance of the streams had been mainly detected in flow 1, which is the original one when the eruption started; flow 2, the one that formed the second lava delta on the beach of Los Guirres; and flow 9, the one that has advanced on the strip created by the eruption of the San Juan volcano in 1949.

This new stream coincides with a phase of increased seismic activity, with almost 200 localized earthquakes in the last 24 hours, one of them of magnitude 4.8 with an intensity IV, felt by the population in La Palma, La Gomera, and parts of Tenerife.

Involcan have calculated that the volcano has released energy equivalent to 286.2 terawatt-hours, which is equivalent to 36 times the electricity demand of the whole of the Canary Islands during 2020, and 1,158 times the electricity consumption of the island of La Palma last year.
