Putting on sunglasses behind the wheel may feel like a natural step to protect your eyes from the glare, but not every pair is suitable for driving. The Spanish traffic authority (DGT) has reminded drivers that certain models can lead to fines of up to €200, even though they do not carry penalty points.
The biggest offenders are category 4 sunglasses, the darkest lenses on the market, which filter 97–98% of sunlight.
Designed for extreme conditions such as skiing or mountaineering, they are banned on the road because they severely reduce visibility in tunnels, cloudy weather, or at sunset. Driving with them is classed as negligent and can result in a fine.
Another risky choice is photochromic lenses, which change tint depending on the light. Their drawback is that the adjustment is not immediate, meaning drivers may be left with poor vision for a few seconds when moving suddenly from bright sunlight into shade or tunnels. The DGT does not recommend their use, and if they are shown to impair visibility, fines can also apply.
Equally dangerous are cheap sunglasses bought in markets or without a CE mark, as they may not block UV rays properly or keep colours clear. This can affect vision and road safety, and drivers can be fined for using them.
The safest options for everyday use in Spain are category 2 or 3 sunglasses with proper certification. These filter 57–92% of sunlight and are well-suited for bright conditions. Polarised lenses are even better, as they cut down glare from asphalt and water, improving visibility.
Authorities stress that the aim is not to ban sunglasses, but to ensure drivers choose the right kind. For both safety and your wallet, it’s worth checking what kind of lenses you keep in your glovebox before setting off.
