Man attacks police with iron bar when told to wear a mask

The Guardia Civil arrested a 53-year-old man on Sunday, after he tried to attack the officials who requested that he put on a mask with an iron bar, in Teror in Gran Canaria.

The officers were driving past a big supermarket in the area when they saw the man walking down the street with other people, not wearing a mask, which are mandatory in public, and have been for several months now.

Due to this being a breach of health regulations, they stopped and asked him to put one on, reminding that they are a legal requirement and non-compliance results in a fine.

The man said that he didn’t have one and tried to walk off, so officers stopped him and offered him one from their supply in their patrol car, but the man explicitly refused to put one on, claiming that he was not obliged to wear it, and that they can’t make him.

Due to this, officers said that they would have to sanction him and asked for official identification, but instead of getting out his DNI card, the man pulled out a thick iron bar of about 50 centimetres in length that was hidden in a bag, and tried to attack the policemen.

Fortunately, the agents were able to detain the man without getting injured, and instead of just fining him for non-compliance of health measures, he was arrested for attacking persons of authority and possession of a weapon with intent to use it.

The rest of the group were all wearing masks and complied with the police in the correct manner.
