A woman in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been sentenced to six months in prison and fined €2,000 after admitting to a hate crime involving racist abuse directed at a man in a public square.
The incident took place on 11th October 2023 in Plaza de España, one of the busiest areas in the city.
According to court records, the woman followed the victim for approximately 15 minutes, loudly insulting him with slurs related to his migrant background and the colour of his skin. Her behaviour, witnessed by several bystanders, left the man feeling deeply humiliated and prompted him to contact the police.
Police officers who responded to the incident confirmed the victim’s account after interviewing witnesses and arrested the woman at the scene. It was later discovered that she has previous convictions for theft and domestic abuse.
Prosecutors initially sought a two-year custodial sentence and a fine of nearly €3,000. However, a plea deal was reached, and the sentence was suspended on the condition that she does not re-offend within the next two years.
In addition to the fine and suspended prison term, the court ordered the woman to complete 32 days of community service and attend an equality awareness course as part of her rehabilitation.
