The emergency services are continuing an intensive search for a woman who went missing after being swept into the sea last night (Wednesday) in northern Tenerife. The incident triggered a major rescue operation involving land, sea and air units, which remains active as crews race against time to locate her.
The Canary Islands’ emergency coordination centre confirmed that the incident occurred along the coastline of the municipality of Tacoronte. The emergency alert was received by the 1-1-2 control room just after 10:15 pm.
The missing woman is a resident of the coastal area of Mesa del Mar, where she had been living for just two months. According to initial reports, she was walking with another person and a dog when they crossed a coastal safety barrier designed to protect against dangerous sea conditions.
Moments later, a strong wave struck the area, sweeping the dog into the sea first, followed by the woman. While the animal managed to reach safety, the woman was dragged out to sea and did not return to shore.
A large-scale emergency response was immediately activated, with search teams combing the area by land, sea and air throughout the night. Resources involved include Salvamento Marítimo, Tenerife Firefighters, the Guardia Civil, Tacoronte Local Police, Civil Protection volunteers and medical personnel from the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC).
Witnesses reported that the woman fell into the water near the crane area of Mesa del Mar, a section of coastline known for strong swells and sudden waves, particularly during adverse sea conditions. Despite extensive search efforts, no trace of the woman had been found at the time of writing.
