The Emergency Services have rescued two men in their 50s this morning (Wednesday), from certain drowning due to sea conditions, on the coast of La Aldea de San Nicolás in Gran Canaria, as reported by the 112 Coordination Centre (CECOES), highlighting why the weather warnings must be observed for your own safety.

The two men were near the Playa de Las Arenas beach in an area difficult for rescuers to access, with one of them by the rocks where the waves were crashing and the other in a cave that was flooded after the tide had come in.

Both men were suffering from hypothermia, had nasty cuts and bruises from the rocks, and were showing signs of near drowning due to the amount of water they had swallowed and how exhausted they were battling the swell and currents of the sea.

After being pulled out of the water, the rescue helicopter took them straight to the helipad of the Doctor Negrín Hospital in las Palmas where they are being treated.

CECOES reminds that the Canary Islands account for more than half of the fatal drownings in Spain so far this year: 17 of 33, according to statistics from the Spanish Federation of Rescue and First Aid.
