A hiker had to be airlifted to safety on Tuesday afternoon after suffering a fall in a remote and difficult-to-reach area of Las Cañadas del Teide, inside Tenerife’s famous national park. The alert was raised early in the afternoon, prompting an immediate response from emergency services due to the challenging terrain and limited access for ground teams.
A rescue helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) was dispatched to the scene, where the crew located the injured man on a rocky section of the landscape. Conditions in Teide National Park can change quickly, and its steep, volcanic terrain often requires specialist aerial assistance for safe evacuations.
Using a winch, GES rescuers were able to safely secure and lift the hiker into the aircraft. He was flown directly to the helipad in La Guancha, where SUC medical staff were waiting to assess him. Fortunately, his injuries were described as minor, and after receiving on-site treatment he did not require transfer to hospital.
Emergency services noted that the operation ran smoothly thanks to clear weather conditions and the rapid coordination between the GES helicopter crew and ground personnel.
The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with hiking in high-altitude environments such as Teide, where uneven terrain and sudden weather changes increase the likelihood of falls or disorientation.
Authorities continue to encourage walkers to plan routes carefully, carry sufficient supplies, and travel with appropriate footwear and equipment.
