In the early hours of this morning (Saturday), Local Police officers in Arona, together with the Guardia Civil, apprehended two men as they attempted to illegally break into and occupy a residential building in the municipality.
The suspects, both wearing hoods to conceal their identities, were caught in the act after the building’s alarm system alerted the authorities. Upon arrival, officers discovered the men trying to break in, having already caused damage to the property by breaking doors in order to replace their locking cylinders.
Thanks to the swift coordination between Arona’s Local Police and the Guard Civil, the men were stopped before further they could cause further damage, and were arrested at the scene.
The incident comes amid growing concerns over illegal property occupations (squatting) in the Canary Islands, with hundreds of such cases reportedly going on across the archipelago.
