Three ‘sun and beach’ destinations in the Canaries are among the most visited in Spain

The latest data from the INE shows that 14.6% of all tourists that Spain received this year spent their holidays in one of the eight municipalities that are the leading sun and beach destinations in the country, and three of them are here in the Canary Islands.

The list is as follows:
Adeje (Tenerife)
Arona (Tenerife)
Benidorm (Alicante)
Calvià (Majorca)
Lloret de Mar (Girona)
Salou (Tarragona)
San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria)
Torremolinos (Málaga)

In a statement, the Alliance of Tourist Municipalities of Sun and Beaches, which make up these towns, highlighted that the data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE) reveals that between these eight they welcomed 9.9 of the 67.7 million registered Spanish and international tourists in the country until November.

"After the social and economic crisis caused by more than two years of unemployment in tourism, as a consequence of the pandemic, Adeje, Arona, Benidorm, Calvià, Lloret de Mar, Salou, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, and Torremolinos are the eight municipalities tourists headed for resulting in a historic recovery for the sector, approaching the figures for visits, employment, and job creation prior to 2020”, they say.

They also highlight that during this year the weight of these towns in the reception of visitors is exceeded by almost five percentage points, going from 9% of the total number of tourists in the country in 2019 to 14.6% of visitors registered in 2022.

"The number of visitors, and the increase in these eight towns, is endorsed with the decision of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism to designate the support of 'Sol y Playa y Azul' tourism as a priority for 2023, thus developing a specific National Plan for the next year”, they add.
