Canary Islands Government approves 72-hour limit for campervans in designated overnight areas

The Canary Islands Government has approved new rules for outdoor tourist accommodation, including a maximum stay of 72 hours in designated motorhome overnight areas.

The limit applies to those designated facilities. Ordinary parking will continue to be governed by traffic rules and restrictions in each location.

Approved on Friday (30th October), the decree covers campsites, motorhome camping and overnight areas, camping linked to isolated rural buildings, and unusual accommodation such as yurts and treehouses.

When will the rules start?

The regulation takes effect three months after publication in the official Canary Islands bulletin. Existing establishments will have five years to adapt their facilities and services.

Requirements cover water supplies, waste disposal, hygiene, safety and accessibility.

Permission still required

Operators must submit a formal declaration to the relevant island council and obtain the necessary planning, environmental and safety permissions.

The decree does not automatically authorise accommodation on any plot of land or create new overnight areas.
