The City Council of Las Palmas has approved a request by the Tamaraceite-San Lorenzo-Tenoya District Board, for the fireworks of San Lorenzo to be officially recognised as a ‘festival of tourist interest’ in the Canary Islands, which take place in August in the town located in the northeast of Gran Canaria.
The festivities of San Lorenzo are a deeply rooted tradition in the capital of Gran Canaria and are enjoyed by thousands of people every year. In 1990 they were declared festivals of interest to the city, and the town itself has had the city's gold medal since 2008 for the importance of the celebration, which takes place between August 1st and 15th every year.
The most popular event is the massive fireworks display that takes place on August 9th and 10th, when more than 300 kilos of gunpowder are set off watched by some 60,000 people.
Here is a video of the last time they took place in 2019 before the pandemic.
The Government has granted recognition as it falls into the category of “those festivals or events that involve manifestations of cultural values and popular tradition with special consideration for their ethnological characteristics, which have special importance as a tourist attraction, and that operate at a municipal level.
