The Cabildo approves 134 new social homes in the south of Tenerife

The Tenerife Cabildo are ramping up investment in key areas including housing, transport, sanitation, and agriculture, after unveiling a series of initiatives aimed at improving quality of life and promoting sustainable development across the island.

A significant boost to social housing has been confirmed, with the Cabildo, led by President Rosa Dávila and Vice President Lope Afonso, approving the construction of 134 new homes in the municipalities of Adeje, Arona, and Guía de Isora in the south of Tenerife.

The project forms part of a broader regional plan to deliver 674 new homes across the Canary Islands. With a total investment exceeding €18 million, of which the Tenerife Cabildo will contribute €4.4 million to support residents in urgent need of housing.

With transport, the island’s new Demand-Responsive Transport (DRT) service is proving a success in Güímar, Arico, and Fasnia. Launched in November 2024, the service has already benefitted over 5,000 users, serving nearly 40% of the local population.

Running from Monday to Friday between 6:30am and 8:30pm, the service connects rural areas with main bus routes, encouraging public transport use and reducing reliance on private vehicles.

President Dávila praised the initiative as a “milestone” in sustainable mobility. Plans are already in motion to expand the DRT system to other municipalities, including Tacoronte-El Sauzal, La Matanza, La Victoria, Santa Úrsula, Icod, Garachico, El Tanque, and Los Silos.

Tenerife is also making strides in infrastructure, with a new €2.5 million sanitation project underway in Las Chafiras. The initiative, a joint effort between the Island Council and San Miguel de Abona Town Council, aims to upgrade essential municipal services and address long-standing infrastructure needs in the area.

On the agricultural front, the Cabildo is reinforcing its commitment to rural development through new research initiatives and enhanced veterinary support for livestock. The goal is to strengthen the resilience of local farming operations, particularly cattle farms, by ensuring high standards of animal health and welfare.

These measures, spanning housing, transport, infrastructure, and agriculture, signal a comprehensive approach by the Cabildo to promote inclusive growth and sustainable living across Tenerife.
