A resident of Tenerife has been issued with a fine of €1,500 for repeatedly feeding pigeons in public areas of Santa Cruz, in violation of the Municipal Ordinance on Animal Protection and Ownership.
The regulation classifies such behaviour as a serious offence, and the fine was imposed by the City Council’s Department of Environmental Sustainability and Public Services.
The violation was documented on multiple occasions by officers of the Local Police and supported by technical reports from the Department of Public Services.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasised the importance of adhering to municipal regulations to maintain hygiene and balance in public spaces. “We cannot allow behaviours that disrupt coexistence and create sanitary issues in the city,” he stated.
Councillor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, stressed that this was not an isolated penalty but rather the result of repeated non-compliance despite prior warnings.
“Uncontrolled feeding of animals in public spaces can lead to hygiene problems and the proliferation of pests, making it imperative to take firm action,” he explained.
The Council has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing regulations and urges residents to respect municipal laws regarding animal ownership and protection. Authorities stress that such measures are crucial for preserving public hygiene and ensuring the overall well-being of the city’s inhabitants.
