The Tenerife Cabildo has allocated €1.4 million to support the construction of 188 new social housing units across several of the island’s less populated municipalities. This initiative, part of the island-wide Activa Suelo program, focuses on areas with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants.
The municipalities benefiting from this initiative include Los Silos (14 homes), El Sauzal (52 homes), El Rosario (25 homes), Buenavista del Norte (26 homes), Santiago del Teide (50 homes), and La Victoria de Acentejo (21 homes).
The project aims to address the growing need for affordable housing in these areas by financing the acquisition of land, urbanisation works on municipal properties, and the purchase and development of suitable plots.
Hernández highlighted that the subsidies provided under this program are specifically for land that is designated for the construction of protected rental housing.
The Activa Suelo program has an initial budget of €1.5 million, co-financed by the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI), with the possibility of increasing this amount by an additional €1 million within the current fiscal year to accommodate more applications.
The maximum subsidy allocated per municipality is capped at €250,000. For instance, Los Silos has received €150,750 for the purchase of plots for 14 homes. Urbanisation projects in El Sauzal and El Rosario have been awarded €250,000 each, supporting the construction of 52 and 25 homes, respectively.
Further funding has been allocated for land purchase and urbanisation works in Buenavista del Norte (26 homes), Santiago del Teide (50 homes), and La Victoria de Acentejo (21 homes), who have received €250,000 each.
This investment by the Tenerife Cabildo represents a substantial commitment to improving living conditions in smaller communities by increasing the availability of affordable housing, thereby supporting the socio-economic development of these regions.
