The Tenerife Cabildo are enforcing new safety measures from 4:00pm this afternoon, Saturday, closing forest tracks and prohibiting access to the trails leading to the peak of Mount Teide due to adverse weather conditions, including rain and snow, in the island's high-altitude areas.
The island's Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN) will also be activated from midnight on Sunday, as indicated in an official statement from the local government. The decision was made during a meeting involving Blanca Pérez, the Councillor for Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, along with Iván Martín, the Insular Director of Security and Emergencies, and Civil Protection technicians.
Authorities Urge Caution and to Limit Travel
Rosa Dávila, President of the Cabildo, called on the public to "exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and refrain from going to the island's high-altitude areas or engaging in outdoor activities." She emphasized that the activation of the PEIN and the associated measures aim to "ensure the safety of the public."
Blanca Pérez explained that activating the PEIN allows for continuous monitoring of the weather patterns and said that emergency resources are ready to respond if needed. Municipalities are advised to consider preventive measures and to follow Civil Protection's self-protection guidelines.
Specific Trail and Forest Access Restrictions
The Cabildo has outlined specific trail closures, including:
Additionally, access to forest areas will be restricted, particularly in zones affected by the 2023 Arafo wildfire, due to the ongoing risk of rockslides. The following forest roads will also be closed:
1. Lomo Atravesado track, VM 2.1: From the TF-24 road to the GR-131.
2. Siete Fuentes track, VM 2: In the section that remained open.
3. Camino a Candelaria: From Aguamansa to La Crucita, between the GR-131 and the TF-24.
4. PK 29 track, VM-17: From the TF-21 road to Piedra de los Pastores.
These restrictions will align with any future road closures that may be implemented as a precautionary measure due to the anticipated adverse weather. The restrictions apply to the public, businesses, and entities outside the Cabildo's department responsible for managing forests, protected natural areas, and forest fire prevention and response.
