TITSA boosts public transport in Tenerife with 31 new buses

TITSA, Tenerife's main public transport company, is stepping up its game with the addition of 31 new buses to its fleet, half of which are a spacious 15 metres long. These new arrivals are set to hit the island's busiest routes in both the north and south, part of a larger shipment of 104 buses expected throughout the year.

The unveiling took place at TITSA's facility in Cueva Blancas, near Santa Cruz, where island president Rosa Dávila introduced the fleet upgrade. This initiative is all about making travel more accessible for everyone, especially those with mobility or sensory challenges.

The buses are destined for high-demand lines like the 108 to Icod de los Vinos, plus direct routes to La Orotava and Los Realejos. Southern routes, including those linking San Isidro to Costa Adeje and Santa Cruz to San Isidro, will also benefit. Importantly, the upgrade includes weekend services, a popular request from passengers.

All of the new buses are packed with features to assist passengers with disabilities. Looking ahead, TITSA plans to add 70 more buses in 2026, including double-deckers with room for 110 passengers each, with a total investment of €25 million.

Dávila highlighted TITSA's commitment to accessibility, thanks to input from a dedicated disability advisory board. Improvements include audio signals for doors and stop announcements, plus spaces designed for passengers with reduced mobility, guide dogs, and prams. These enhancements are all about making journeys more comfortable and enjoyable for everyone.

Reflecting on recent successes, Dávila noted that passenger numbers have nearly doubled, reaching 82 million by the end of 2024, up from 43 million before free fares were introduced at the start of 2023. So far in 2025, passenger numbers have increased by 6.50%, with a rise from 13,372,180 to 14,241,196.

Despite these impressive gains, there's always room for improvement, especially in service quality. The new buses will help boost line options and frequency, and the introduction of hybrid buses will reduce environmental impact. Dávila hopes these efforts will entice even more Tenerife residents to opt for public transport.
