Storm Dorothea causes nearly 100 incidents in the Canary Islands

The severe weather conditions caused by Storm Dorothea have led to almost 100 incidents in the Canary Islands, predominantly affecting the islands of Tenerife and El Hierro, according to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

While there have been no injuries or damage to vehicles, the powerful winds have resulted in significant disruptions, and AENA have said that delays and flight cancellations are “very possible”.

According to CECOES, most of the incidents have involved road blockages caused by landslides and debris swept onto the road by the high winds. The regional government’s Directorate General of Emergencies has declared a state of "maximum alert" in response to the adverse conditions.

In addition to road hazards, the weather has disrupted air travel. AENA has urged passengers departing from Tenerife and the western islands to check the status of their flights as delays and cancellations remain possible.

The regional Ministry of Education and Sports has announced the suspension of all educational activities, both curricular and extracurricular, for Monday 16th December at all schools in El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife.

This decision follows warnings of wind gusts that could exceed 120 km/h, with some reaching hurricane-like speeds.

In the south of Tenerife, the Aedje Council have reported several incidents in the municipality, including a lamppost that has been blown over in Callao Salvaje.

In La Laguna, municipal authorities have highlighted various incidents caused by the intense winds. Among the reported damage are a toppled lifeguard hut in Punta del Hidalgo, a collapsed fence at a construction site, part of a house roof blown off, and a fallen tree along the route between Tejina and Valle de Guerra.
