Shop owner arrested in Lanzarote for selling stolen jewellery

The National Police have arrested a man in Lanzarote accused of handling and selling stolen goods. The arrest stems from his involvement in the acquisition of a gold chain that had been stolen during an armed robbery in Arrecife at the end of 2023.

The discovery was made during a routine inspection of a jewellery and precious metals trading store in Arrecife.

Officers identified multiple irregularities in the store, which violated the legal requirements outlined in the Regulation of the Law on Manufactured Objects with Precious Metals.

Among the items scrutinised, the gold chain in question was found to have been fraudulently acquired by the establishment's owner. After holding onto it for a "prudent" period, the chain was put up for sale. Police investigations confirmed that it was linked to the violent robbery reported the previous year.

Following this, the suspect, who already has a criminal record, was taken into custody and presented to the relevant judicial authorities. The investigation remains active, with the police indicating that further arrests cannot be ruled out as they delve deeper into the case.
