San Sebastián Festival in Adeje: A celebration of 500 years of history and tradition

Today, 20th January, is the San Sebastian festival and Adeje Town Hall is finalising preparations for what is one of Tenerife's most significant cultural and festive events.

This revered festival, which spans over five centuries of tradition, is eagerly awaited by locals and visitors alike.

The event will take place from midday with mass in the San Sebastián Church (near Costa Adeje Palace Hotel), followed by a grand procession to La Enramada beach for the traditional blessing of the animals in the sea.

Festivities Schedule

Mass, accompanied by music from Boleros de Armeñime, will be broadcast live on Radio Sur Adeje 107.9 FM from midday. After the mass, the iconic procession to the sea will take place to Playa La Enramada Beach, featuring an equestrian parade and the Nuestra Señora de las Nieves Group. The traditional romería parade, involving animals such as oxen, goats, and camels, will culminate with their blessing in the sea.

Animal Participation and Welfare

The festival is known for its strong connection to the animal world. Attendees wishing to bring animals, such as horses, camels, goats, and sheep, were required to pre-register at the Adeje Cultural Centre, providing the necessary documentation, including the animal’s vaccination records and civil liability insurance. To date, over 70 animals have been confirmed as participants.

Veterinary staff will be present to ensure the well-being of the animals, and designated shaded areas and fresh water will be available to keep the animals comfortable while they await their turn in the procession.

Safety Measures

Given the scale of the event, the Adeje Town Hall has implemented a comprehensive safety plan. Local and National Police, the Guardia Civil, Civil Protection units, and rescue services will be present to ensure the smooth running of the celebrations. Additionally, a dedicated team of municipal staff will be on hand to oversee developments throughout the festival.

Historical Significance

The San Sebastián festival dates back to the early 16th century, originating as a celebration by farmers and shepherds who honoured their patron saint, attributed with numerous miracles. Over time, it has evolved into a cherished tradition that brings the community together.

The San Sebastián statue, crafted in 1916 by the Bririllo workshop in Valencia, is renowned for its Mannerist classicism. The statue’s intricate carving and dynamic pose evoke the artistic style of Bernini, with a blend of pain and ecstasy reminiscent of the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.

San Sebastián’s veneration has deep ties to Adeje's history. The saint considered a protector against epidemics and a guardian of animals vital to the agricultural economy, became central to local religious and cultural practices.

The festival transitioned to its current format in the late 1970s, centred at La Enramada beach. Since 1993, Adeje Town Hall has taken responsibility for organising the event, continuing to honour the deep-rooted traditions.

Thousands of pilgrims now gather annually to participate in the festival, many bringing their animals for the traditional blessing. Horse riders, in particular, display their skills by leading their mounts into the sea as part of the procession, which the public are invited to come and watch.
