At least ten buses have been destroyed following a large fire at the interurban transport depot in Arrecife, Lanzarote, on Monday afternoon. The blaze broke out at the premises of Lanzarote Bus, the company responsible for interurban bus services across the island.

According to the Lanzarote Island Emergency Consortium, the fire caused significant material damage but no injuries have been reported.

Workers Evacuated Safely

Employees at the depot were able to get to safety shortly after the fire started. Initial reports suggest the blaze may have begun due to combustion in one of the buses, although investigations are ongoing.

More than 20 buses were reportedly inside the depot at the time. At least ten vehicles were completely burned out.

A nearby restaurant and petrol station were evacuated as a precaution due to the thick column of black smoke rising from the site.

Emergency Response and Ongoing Operations

Firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control, assisted by Civil Protection teams and officers from the Local and National Police forces.

Emergency crews also attempted to remove other buses from the depot, including several newly acquired vehicles, to prevent further losses.

In order to access the interior more effectively, firefighters used heavy machinery to break through one of the building’s walls and have been cooling the affected area to stop the fire from reigniting.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and it remains unclear how the incident may affect bus services in the coming days.

This is not the first time Lanzarote Bus has been in the news recently, after another incident at the depot when a runaway bus crashed through the wall of a warehouse meaning another staff evacuation.
