Freak accident as runaway bus smashes through building in Lanzarote
A serious accident involving a runaway bus occurred yesterday afternoon, Tuesday 10th February, inside the facilities of Lanzarote Bus, damaging four vehicles and causing significant structural damage.
According to reports, one of the buses was inside the depot when it suddenly began moving while the driver was carrying out cleaning tasks. The vehicle shot forward unexpectedly, breaking through the door and part of the building’s wall before colliding with another bus and several vehicles nearby.
After travelling several metres outside the structure, the runaway bus crashed into a neighbouring warehouse, becoming lodged in the building with part of the vehicle suspended, evidence of the force of the impact. Emergency teams secured the area due to the instability of the damaged structure.
The driver, the only person inside at the time, initially said he felt fine, but after he was assessed on-site by medics, he was taken to the Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital for further evaluation.
The crash caused extensive damage to both buildings, including the collapse of part of a wall, a support pillar and several interior sections. Firefighters inspected the upper floor of the affected warehouse, where cracks were detected, prompting the evacuation of offices and removal of essential materials until a structural specialist can carry out a full assessment.
Cleanup crews removed debris from the collapsed wall and surrounding area, with the municipal cleaning service completing the final phase of the operation. Authorities confirmed the intervention concluded once the site was secured.
