Repair works completed on the promenade in Las Galletas

The Arona Town Council has announced the completion of repair works on the Paseo Marítimo de Las Galletas, a crucial restoration project aimed at repairing damage caused by erosion and storms that led to the walkway’s collapse 17 months ago.

The work, carried out by the council’s Environmental Department, was finished yesterday, Thursday 27th February, ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors who use this coastal promenade, which connects to the Charco del Baño.

The project became a matter of urgency due to the deterioration of the access structures, which posed an ongoing risk to pedestrians. Over the past year, local residents and politicians repeatedly raised concerns about the delayed repairs, calling attention to the lack of response from authorities despite the safety hazards.

Following nearly a year of bureaucratic delays, the council finally confirmed in September 2024 that works would commence, following the urgent approval of the project by the Directorate General of Coasts and Maritime Space Management of the Canary Islands Government.

Key Restoration Works and Improvements

The completed works included the replacement of access points 1 and 4, the reinforcement of seawalls damaged by erosion, and the restoration of the promenade’s pavement. As part of accessibility improvements, tactile paving was installed to assist the visually impaired.

Additionally, a staircase at access 4 was replaced with a new ramp, ensuring compliance with accessibility regulations and improving access for people with reduced mobility. Access points 2 and 3, which had sustained severe damage, were removed, and the seafront wall was sealed for added safety.

Visit by Local Authorities

The newly restored Paseo Marítimo de Las Galletas was officially inspected by Arona’s mayor, Fátima Lemes, accompanied by Councillor for the Environment and Public Services, Clari Pérez, Councillor for Public Works, Héctor Reyes, and Councillor for Urban Planning, Javier Baute.

Mayor Lemes emphasised that the refurbished promenade, “renewed after suffering the effects of last year’s storms and rough seas, is now ready to be enjoyed by both locals and visitors.”

Councillor Clari Pérez detailed the project’s financial and logistical efforts, revealing that the restoration of the seafront wall alone took two months and required an investment of €253,000. She also highlighted that the access points had been widened and equipped with new railings to ensure safer and more convenient entry to the beach.

With these improvements, the Paseo Marítimo de Las Galletas is once again a welcoming and secure space for the community and visitors to enjoy Tenerife’s stunning coastline.
