Renovation work on the Teno Lighthouse set to begin in January

The iconic Teno Lighthouse, located within the scenic Teno Rural Park in Tenerife, is set to undergo extensive rehabilitation beginning in January 2025, at a cost of €1.6 million funded by the European Union’s Next Generation funds.

The aim is to preserve a cherished part of the island's heritage while enhancing its cultural and economic value and is expected to take ten months to complete.

The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, highlighted the significance of this undertaking. “This is an important project for everyone,” she said. “Not only are we restoring a key piece of our heritage, but we are also making it accessible for the public.”

“The future Interpretation Centre will showcase the cultural and social importance of the Teno Rural Park while establishing the lighthouse as a local economic hub.”

Planned Upgrades and Improvements

The project will involve significant improvements to the lighthouse and its surroundings. These include the provision of water and electricity to the building, refurbishment of its interior to accommodate a café or restaurant, and the construction of subterranean restroom facilities and storage areas.

Additionally, parking for authorised users and a turning area will be established. The access routes will also be upgraded to improve public transport connections and safety for visitors.

The restoration and environmental efforts will run concurrently with these developments. The Cabildo and Buenavista del Norte Council have worked closely to synchronise the lighthouse rehabilitation with enhancements to the surrounding area, ensuring an efficient and comprehensive approach to the project.

During the construction period, access to Punta de Teno will be restricted to authorised vehicles and public transport operated by TITSA, with designated schedules in place. This temporary measure is necessary to ensure the safety of both the construction crews and the public.

Historical Significance of Teno Lighthouse

The original Teno Lighthouse, constructed in 1897, ceased operations several decades ago. In 1978, its historic light was replaced with a more advanced navigational beacon housed in a modern tower. Despite its age, the original structure remains in relatively good condition, and this restoration project aims to preserve its legacy for future generations.

The revitalisation of the Teno Lighthouse promises to be a landmark moment for Tenerife, blending heritage conservation with sustainable tourism and community engagement. Once completed, the lighthouse will stand as a symbol of the island’s commitment to honouring its past while looking toward a sustainable future.
