The mixture of haze and rain, which hit the archipelago this morning (Monday), has caused problems at Canarian airports, especially at Los Rodeos in the north of Tenerife, where delays, diversions, and cancellations have already been recorded.
Aena has reported that six flights have been diverted so far to Tenerife South airport due to low visibility because of fog at Tenerife North airport. These diversions were all domestic flights from Barcelona, Madrid, Gran Canaria, La Palma, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote, the last four being operated by Binter airlines, who are urging people to check the status of their flights before they travel.
Air Traffic Controllers at the Tenerife North airport have posted warnings of fog and low clouds, saying that they are causing ‘frustrating’ delays as five aircraft are on standby ready to take off when conditions allow.
There have also been four national and domestic flights cancelled from Madrid, La Gomera, El Hierro, and Fuerteventura before even departing to Tenerife.
In the rest of the archipelago’s airports, there have been no reported incidents as yet associated with adverse weather conditions, according to AENA, but more are expected as the storm worsens.
