People filmed illegally camping in Teide National Park

A group of people have been filmed camping illegally in Teide National Park, near the road in front of the El Portillo Visitor Centre. A video sent to Diario de Avisos newspaper shows two tents set up with several campers gathered around them.

"This is unacceptable, it's incredible," the witness can be heard saying in the footage.

Camping is strictly prohibited in Teide National Park, a protected natural area. Only vivac (sleeping outdoors without a tent) is permitted in designated areas above 2,500 metres, and even then, only with prior authorisation.

Additionally, making fires is forbidden due to the high risk to the ecosystem and public safety.

Fines for Illegal Camping

According to current regulations, camping in protected natural areas can result in fines ranging from €150 to €600. The severity of the fine depends on the level of environmental impact and the seriousness of the offence.

The Teide National Park Management Plan enforces these restrictions to protect the fragile ecosystem, preserving its flora and fauna from human impact.

Authorities continue to monitor and enforce these rules to ensure the conservation of one of the Canary Islands most iconic landscapes.
