There were 51,907 new cars registered in Spain in August, which is an increase of 9.1% in the same month of 2021, however, overall sales since the start of the year are still down 9.4%.
This increase is primarily due to sales to businesses, including rent-a-car companies, which increased by 23%, whereas new car sales to private individuals dropped by 4.3%.
"These monthly figures could give the wrong impression," said a spokesperson for industry body Anfac, adding that compared to 2019, pre-Covid, sales are down 40% for the year so far.
This drop in sales isn’t isolated to Spain, it is a global situation and is partly due to supply problems of microchips due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and worldwide inflation.
