Man arrested after threatening to blow up a building in Gran Canaria

The National Police arrested a 59-year-old man in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria yesterday (Wednesday) after he threatened to blow up an entire building with a gas cannister if they proceeded with his eviction from an apartment, which had been ordered by a local court.

According to the police report, when officers arrived at the scene of the incident, they saw a man leaning out of the balcony of the apartment, who began shouting and threatening them as well as brandishing a lighter and warning them that if they forced him out of the property, he would set light to a gas canister he was holding.

Officers claimed that the man said that he was quite prepared to "blow up the entire building with his neighbours still inside it."

Faced with these threats, the officers exercised extreme caution and attempted to engage in dialogue with the man. Eventually, they managed to calm him down, which allowed for his immediate apprehension.

At the same time, members of the National Police's TEDAX unit, who had arrived at the location, took custody of the gas canister.

The detainee, who has a history of previous offences, has been brought before the judicial authorities charged with serious disobedience and resistance to law enforcement, as reported by the Superior Police Headquarters of the Canary Islands.
