Cabildo looking at new campsites and improved facilities for campervans in Tenerife

The Tenerife Cabildo is currently assessing the development of new camping areas in three key locations, Granadilla, Vilaflor, and Anaga, as part of a wider strategy to enhance camping and motorhome facilities across the island. The initiative also includes upgrades to existing sites in Tacoronte and Guía de Isora.

Blanca Pérez, Councillor for the Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, recently held a meeting with representatives from Autocaravanismo por Canarias, a collective of various associations promoting motorhome and camping tourism across the Canary Islands.

Pérez explained that the Cabildo is responding to a noticeable rise in camping and motorhome activity following the COVID-19 pandemic. "We are working to organise and improve the facilities available at our designated camping areas, and to refurbish several existing ones. We are also considering the creation of new sites to accommodate this increasingly popular activity, not only in Tenerife but throughout the Canary Islands," she said.

The plan includes evaluating whether the island’s network of waste disposal points can manage the grey and black water produced by motorhomes, ensuring it can be treated appropriately. “Our aim is to enhance the overall service provided at the camping areas under the Cabildo's jurisdiction,” Pérez stated. “We also want to improve how motorhome spaces are managed, encouraging the public to use them responsibly.”

The move forms part of a broader environmental and tourism strategy aimed at supporting sustainable recreational activities in Tenerife's protected natural areas, while also ensuring the facilities meet the growing demand from both local residents and visitors.
