The airline group IAG (International Airlines Group), owner of British Airways and Iberia, will invest €55 million to maintain its 20% shareholding in Air Europa, according to its president Luis Gallego in an interview with El País.
Gallego confirmed that IAG’s participation in Air Europa “will continue as a financial investment”, rather than a strategic one, signalling the group’s intent to retain its position while benefiting from the airline’s renewed growth.
IAG had already expressed its determination to keep its 20% stake following the entry of Turkish Airlines, which recently acquired a 27% share in Air Europa, giving the Spanish carrier a fresh boost in international operations and new expansion opportunities.
Reflecting on IAG’s earlier attempt to fully acquire Air Europa, Gallego said the group’s goal was to “strengthen Madrid-Barajas Airport” as a major hub, adding that he had no regrets about the effort, remarking that “trying to be ambitious is not a mistake.”
The move underlines IAG’s continued interest in Spain’s aviation sector and its strategic alignment with the country’s growing role in global air traffic.
