The north of Tenerife experienced severe heavy rains this morning (Friday), resulting in major rockslides that have blocked a road in the Anaga district of Santa Cruz and caused damage to three schools in La Laguna.
Personnel from the Natural Environment Unit (UMEN) are actively working to clear the El Draguillo-Benijo road, which has been impassable since early morning due to the landslides triggered by the heavy downpours.
In addition to road blockages, the intense rain has impacted homes, rendering some areas temporarily inaccessible. One vehicle was nearly buried by falling rocks, highlighting the severity of the situation.
Municipal workers are diligently conducting cleanup operations to restore access to the affected areas as quickly as possible. Efforts are underway to ensure the safety and accessibility of the impacted neighbourhoods.
In La Laguna, the heavy rains have caused damage at CEIP Camino Largo playground, several classrooms at Princesa de Tejina School, and the Centro de Adultos del Nordeste. The affected educational centres are currently assessing the extent of the damage so that normal operations can resume.
The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a weather warning regarding the ongoing rains. The forecast for today indicates predominantly cloudy skies in the north and west of the island, with generally light to occasional rains. Locally, moderate rainfall is expected, especially in the northern valleys.
Elsewhere on the island, cloud cover will persist with overcast conditions developing from midday. There is a probability of occasional afternoon showers, particularly on the eastern interior slopes, according to AEMET.
