Four killed as terrace floor of beach club restaurant collapses in Majorca

Four people have been killed and dozens more injured after a building collapsed at a beach resort in Majorca last night (Thursday). The emergency services were called to the Medusa Beach Club, a beach bar on Calle Cartago in Playa de Palma, where the terrace of the two-storey building is believed to have collapsed leaving only the façade still standing, according to local media.

Around a hundred emergency services personnel worked through the night as it is believed people are still trapped inside the rubble. Currently, the total number of injured now stands at 16 and not 21 as officials had previously stated or 27 as sources said last night.

Local media have reported three women and one man have been killed, and that two of them worked at the club. Several tourists reportedly tried to enter the premises after the collapse because they suspected friends were inside.

The bar is understood to be popular with British and German tourists, although details on the identities of those affected remain scarce. The British Foreign Office told the Telegraph last night that there are no reports that British nationals were involved in the incident.

A spokesperson said: 'We are aware of an incident in Palma, and there are currently no reports of British nationals having been involved. We remain in contact with the Spanish authorities.'

According to reports the floor of the premises collapsed at around 8:45pm, from the terrace to the basement Allegedly there were people dancing on the terrace as it collapsed on top of another floor underneath, with customers and staff inside.

A fire brigade crane and rescue workers have been going through rubble looking for evidence. A local resident told MailOnline: “It's terrible, two storeys collapsed and took everyone down with it. There were local people and tourists in there. God help them.”

The emergency services told people close by to be as quiet as possible while crews continue their work looking for survivors. “We ask you remain silent because we need quiet to see if we hear someone,” a police spokesperson told local radio.

“The terrace has collapsed, probably due to excessive weight,” he said, adding that the causes are still being investigated.

Neighbours said they heard a loud noise followed by screams coming from the venue as the building collapsed, La Vanguardia reported.

The emergency services have not yet shared the identities of all of the deceased, and have neither confirmed nor denied whether tourists were involved.

The injured, seven very seriously and nine seriously, were evacuated through the back of the restaurant where they were assessed by medical personnel, before being taken to local hospitals for further treatment.

Investigators are still working to determine the exact cause of the accident.
