Five new speed cameras installed on busy roads in Tenerife

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has activated 17 new speed cameras across the country today, Monday, as part of its 2025 nationwide plan to expand speed control measures. Tenerife has been included in this latest rollout, with five new radar devices now operational across several key roads on the island.

Specifically, the new installations consist of three fixed speed cameras and two average speed (tramo) cameras, located along the TF-5 motorway, and on the TF-66, TF-65, and at two separate points on the TF-655 in the south of the island.

These additions are part of a broader strategy that will see 122 new radar units deployed nationwide throughout 2025, with a particular focus on conventional roads and high-volume traffic routes.

As is standard practice, all new cameras are signposted, and their exact locations are available on the official DGT website. This information has also been shared with GPS navigation providers to ensure it is reflected in digital maps and driving routes.

For the first month after activation, drivers who exceed the speed limits in these monitored areas will not face fines. However, they will receive an informational notice at their registered address, warning them of the infraction. This grace period is designed to raise awareness and encourage voluntary compliance before enforcement begins.

After this initial period, any driver caught speeding by the new cameras will face fines according to the standard DGT penalty framework.

The DGT continues to stress the dangers of speeding, noting that just a 10 km/h increase in speed can raise the risk of a fatal crash by 220%, according to the Traffic Safety Observatory. The introduction of these new radars aims to reduce accidents and promote safer driving behaviour across the Canary Islands and the rest of Spain.
