The Tenerife Cabildo has confirmed the start date for the resurfacing of the TF-1 motorway, focusing on the stretch between Arico, Fasnia, and Güímar. The project, which will cost over 30 million euros, is set to begin on November 11th and will continue for six months with construction work scheduled during nighttime hours.
The announcement was made by the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, alongside Vice President Lope Afonso, following a government council meeting. Dávila emphasised the importance of this project, noting that the road surface in this section is heavily damaged, making it necessary to replace the roadway not only on the highway itself but also at the junctions.
Additional works will include the installation of rumble strips, repainting, the setup of rigid concrete barriers, and the installation of guardrails on bridges. These works constitute one of the most significant rehabilitation efforts on the TF-1 in recent years, she highlighted.
Water Supply and Agricultural Support Initiatives
Vice President Lope Afonso also revealed that the Council approved a budget of 47,500 euros for Balten to begin work on installing a water conduit between the Cepsa tank, located at the refinery site, and Balten’s pumping station.
This initiative aims to deliver an average of 1,500 cubic metres of desalinated water daily to farmers in the northeast and south of the island. Within a month, more than 50,000 cubic metres of water could be supplied from Cepsa’s surplus tank, contributing to the island’s water supply strategy amid the ongoing water crisis.
Housing Rehabilitation and Social Programs
Additionally, Afonso announced the approval of the final annex of the island’s 2024 housing rehabilitation program, allocating nearly 2.4 million euros across 29 of Tenerife’s 31 municipalities, with Arona and Granadilla excluded from this round.
The Council also approved a multi-annual agreement with the non-profit organisation Asociación Solidaria Mundo Nuevo to manage a specialized protection centre for children and adolescents with disabilities in residential care under the guidance of the Directorate General for Child and Family Protection. The centre will have up to eight places, and the total investment for this program will be 1.1 million euros between 2024 and 2026.
