A man and woman have been arrested in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura, after barricading themselves in a house with their newborn baby and threatening to harm the child if police entered.

The incident took place on 30th July, when officers from the National Police were called to a property following reports of a violent domestic dispute.

Upon arrival, they found a 38-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man, both with multiple previous police records, locked inside the home with their baby.

The man was already subject to several pending legal charges, including a warrant for his immediate arrest related to a previous threat-related offence.

According to the police report, the couple refused to cooperate and began collecting large bladed weapons. They then used the infant as a human shield, warning officers that the baby would be harmed if they attempted to enter the property.

Due to the seriousness of the situation, a special police unit was deployed, including a trained negotiator from the Canary Islands’ Superior Police Headquarters. After a tense three-hour standoff, officers were able to de-escalate the situation and persuade the couple to surrender peacefully. The baby was handed over and appeared to be in good health at the time.

Following their arrest, the man was remanded directly into custody by court order, while the woman was released on charges pending further investigation.

Authorities have since placed the baby into the care of a child protection centre, citing concerns over the poor hygiene of the home and ongoing drug use by both parents. Social services are now assessing the long-term welfare of the child.
