A passenger arriving at Gran Canaria Airport from mainland Spain has been remanded in custody after Guardia Civil officers found 460 grams of the synthetic drug mephedrone in his luggage.

The man was arrested on 7th October during checks at the airport. Details of the operation emerged in reports published yesterday (Tuesday)..

Officers carrying out routine controls became suspicious of the passenger’s behaviour and decided to examine his belongings more closely.

Subsequent analysis identified the substance as mephedrone, a synthetic stimulant belonging to the cathinone family.

The passenger was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking. He and the seized substance were placed at the disposal of the duty investigating court in Telde, which ordered his remand in custody.

The available information does not identify the man, disclose his nationality or specify which mainland airport his flight departed from.

No further details have been released about the intended destination of the drugs or whether investigators suspect anyone else was involved.
