After several months of dispute, the Granadilla de Abona Council has successfully evicted an unauthorised caravan parking site in the south of Tenerife, located in front of Montaña Roja in El Médano.
The private land, previously used as an illegal parking area for motorhomes, caravans, and campervans, was cleared in coordination with the Canary Islands Agency for Environmental Protection and the landowner.
The area had become a common site, with between 20 and 30 vehicles parked daily. The primary issue stemmed from the lands classification as private property situated on rustic land with landscape protection status.
This designation prohibits actions such as fencing off the area to control or restrict access without proper coordination and permission from the relevant authorities. However, after a prolonged bureaucratic process, the council decided to outline the area’s boundaries with a stone perimeter to prevent future occupation by additional vehicles.
David Santos, spokesperson for the Granadilla Council, remarked yesterday (Friday), “It has not been easy, but we have finally managed to remove the large number of caravans around Montaña Roja, thanks to the efforts of the municipal services and the Local Police force.”
The eviction was carried out smoothly following prior notifications to the occupants several days in advance. Santos explained that the decision was largely driven by the detrimental effects the camping activity had on the local ecosystem, particularly due to the accumulation of waste and oil spills.
In recent months, the Granadilla municipality has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to preventing the formation of large caravan congregations on private land. Concurrently, efforts are underway to identify public sites suitable for such parking needs. These initiatives await the implementation of a uniform island-wide ordinance, which the Cabildo announced would be completed last April.
