Canary Islands population increased by 20,500 over the last year to 2.2 million

According to the Continuous Population Survey, the Canary Islands gained 20,501 more resident inhabitants at the end of the first quarter (from March 2023 to March 2024), and now has a total population of 2,240,626 people, which reflects a demographic increase of 0.9%. In total, there are 1,106,199 men and 1,134,427 women in the archipelago.

In Spain as a whole, the resident population increased by 82,346 people in the first quarter, reaching a new historical high of 48,692,804 inhabitants.

Spain's demographic growth was almost entirely due to the increase in people born abroad. This population (8,915,831 people) was larger than that of foreign nationality, due to the processes of acquiring Spanish nationality.

The number of foreigners increased by 85,684 people during the quarter, up to 6,581,028, which is also a new historical high, and the population of Spanish nationality decreased by 3,338 people.

Regarding the nationalities of the immigrants during the first quarter of 2024, the top three were Colombians (39,200), Moroccans (26,000), and Venezuelan (22,600).

Regarding the number of households in Spain, there was an increase of 23,809 between the first quarter of 2024 and the first quarter of 2023, reaching 19,334,585. The pace of growth in the creation of homes has slowed in recent quarters to stand at 0.87% in the first three months of this year.
