The Canarian Police have detained a group of ten hikers and their guide for trekking along a restricted path in the Anaga Rural Park in Tenerife. According to an official statement released today, Thursday, the group was detected walking along the Barranco Seco trail, which runs from Bejia Baja in Anaga to Punta del Hidalgo.
A portion of this route follows water channels, making it particularly hazardous. The authorities have reiterated that access to this path is strictly prohibited due to the dangers it presents. Explicit warning signs are placed at the trailhead near the Muñoz de Bustillo viewpoint to deter access.
Covert and Uniformed Officers Deployed
In response to the violation, a special operation was launched, involving both plainclothes and uniformed officers. The operation was supported by the Environmental Protection and Cultural Heritage Group of the Administrative Surveillance and Inspection Unit (UVIA). A drone was also deployed to monitor the more inaccessible areas of the trail.
The operation resulted in the identification of the group, who had disregarded the prohibition signs. The Canarian Police subsequently informed the Tenerife Cabildo of a potential violation of Law 43/2003 of 21 November on Forestry, specifically Article 67, Section K, which prohibits access to or presence in forested areas where explicit restrictions are in place.
The Administrative Surveillance and Inspection Unit is responsible for preventive policing, investigations, and reporting administrative infractions, particularly in areas concerning environmental protection and natural resources.
