The president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, has reiterated the urgent need for the expansion of the Los Cristianos port, highlighting necessary works such as the underground tunnel for Chayofita to reduce congestion in and out of the town.
She also reaffirmed her party’s “clear” stance against the proposed port at Fonsalía (Guía de Isora), arguing that the environmental concerns associated with the project make it unviable.
According to data from Puertos de Tenerife, Los Cristianos port handled 2.3 million passengers and approximately 500,000 vehicles last year, highlighting the high volume of traffic it sustains.
Dávila emphasised that technical analysis from the College of Engineers demonstrates the unsustainable nature of the current situation in Los Cristianos, regardless of political debates over the Fonsalía project.
“It is necessary, for now, to implement planned land-based interventions, such as the undergrounding of the Chayofita road. Regardless of whether Fonsalía materialises or not, this work is essential to resolve traffic issues in the area and must be carried out in coordination with the Arona council,” she stated.
Furthermore, she argued that Fonsalía lacks full technical backing, as indicated in the report, and is not considered the most suitable location for a new port. In contrast, Los Cristianos remains a viable and necessary infrastructure hub.
“The College of Engineers makes it clear that irrespective of any potential developments regarding Fonsalía, work must be undertaken in Los Cristianos,” Dávila added. She stressed that Fonsalía would not be operational in the short, medium, or long term due to the significant environmental constraints that render the project unfeasible.
