The El Rosario Town Hall has banned swimming along the entire coastline of Tabaiba and ordered the closure of Playa del Moro beach following a large rockfall that has caused significant damage to the local sewage system meaning that wastewater is being discharged into the sea.
The decision has been taken after the rockfall, which occurred in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday, 14th January, causing a break in the sanitation network raising concerns for public health and safety.
As a precaution, the council has also banned pedestrian access to the walkway between Radazul and Tabaiba and prohibited swimming along the coastline between the two areas. The restrictions have been put in place due to the risk posed by further rockfalls and possible sewage contamination in the sea.
In an official notice, the mayor of El Rosario Escolástico Gil also advised residents that, on a temporary basis, the use of the sewage system should be avoided on the eastern hillside of Tabaiba. Residents in these areas are being asked, until further notice, not to flush toilets, and to avoid using showers, baths and washing machines.
The council has also warned against discharging any domestic or industrial wastewater into the sewage network, or carrying out any activity that could add significant volumes of water to the system.
The council has appealed for the “maximum cooperation” from the public and thanked them in advance for their understanding while emergency repairs and safety checks are carried out.
Authorities have not yet confirmed when swimming, coastal access and normal use of the sanitation system will be restored, as work continues to assess the damage and ensure the area is safe.
