Rescue workers searching for missing British teenager Jay Slater have reportedly discovered human remains, according to the Guardia Civil. "Evidence strongly suggests" that the remains are those of the 19-year-old, officers stated.
The body was located in the vicinity where Slater was last seen, according to a Reuters report. Radio Canarias confirmed that the Guardia Civil found a body in ravine in the village of Masca.
"All indications point to it being Jay Slater, the young British man who disappeared on June 17th in Tenerife," Radio Canarias posted on X (formerly Twitter). The initial investigations suggest that an accident or fall may have occurred in the area.
"The Mountain Rescue and Intervention Group (GREIM) of the Guardia Civil has discovered the body of a young man in the Masca area, in the municipality of Buenavista del Norte, following a 29-day search. Preliminary evidence suggests that the remains are those of Jay Slater, a British teenager who went missing on June 17, 2024.
The search, described as incessant and discreet, was conducted to avoid attracting public attention and to preserve the natural environment. The discovery was made in a steep and inaccessible part of the region, leading investigators to believe that Slater may have suffered an accidental fall.
Today's operation, led by the GREIM agents who specialise in mountain rescues, culminated in finding the body in one of the most difficult-to-reach areas of Masca. This discovery follows nearly a month of continuous searching in the presumed disappearance area.
A statement from British overseas missing persons charity, LBT Global, says that the body found in Tenerife does look to be that of Jay Slater. It is understood that it was found close to the site of his mobile's last location, and although it is pending an autopsy and official identification, the body was found with Mr Slater’s possessions and clothes.
