Authorities advise against accessing mountainous areas in Tenerife due to safety concerns

The Tenerife Cabildo has lifted the Insular Emergency Plan (PEIN) but continues to advise the public to avoid mountain areas due to the ongoing risk of falling trees and branches following storms on the island.

In light of these safety concerns, key hiking trails leading to Mount Teide, including the Telesforo Bravo trail, remain closed for at least another 10 days.

A precautionary measure based on weather predictions

The decision follows updated forecasts from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) released yesterday (Thursday). Earlier warnings of storms prompted the Tenerife Cabildo to close recreational areas, campsites, and forestal paths and trails on Wednesday.

These measures were taken under the pre-alert status issued by the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate of Emergencies, based on AEMET predictions.

Public Safety Recommendations

Residents and visitors are strongly urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to the island’s summit areas. The Cabildo emphasizes the importance of adhering to self-protection guidelines provided during pre-alert, alert, and maximum alert situations to minimise risks.

Those planning outdoor activities are advised to stay informed about official updates and ensure compliance with the restrictions in place.
