Aemet issues weather warning for heavy rain in parts of the islands today

As everyone can see from almost any point on the island, Mt Teide looks spectacular due to the amount of snow that has fallen on the highest point of Spain, however, whilst she is looking majestic, AEMET have issued a yellow weather warning for heavy rain in La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, and the northeast of Tenerife.

A white blanket covers the entire Las Cañadas National Park, where minimum temperatures from -2.4°C were recorded in Izaña to -0.8°C in the Orotava access roads. The same can be seen in the Roque de Los Muchachos national park in La Palma, where several people who were trapped in the area had to be rescued, fortunately without anyone being injured.

However, yesterday, as expected, it also rained below the level at which precipitation turns into snow, but was only heavy in Agulo (La Gomera), with 25.8 millilitres per square metre, Valverde (El Hierro), with 11.2, the highlands of Gran Canaria (15.4), La Vega de San Mateo (15.0) and Teror in Gran Canaria with 13.4mm.

Aemet is forecasting that today will have the heaviest rains in a week marked by the arrival of an isolated depression at high levels (DANA), and has activated a yellow weather warning which has led the local authorities to issue a pre-alert.

It should be remembered that a pre-alert does not imply a communication to the population for them to take measures to protect themselves, but it is about informing the emergency services to be on alert as conditions are expected to get worse.

In a continuation of the unpredictable weather, following the rain and warnings, a calima is expected to return to the archipelago this weekend bringing an increase in temperatures.
